Free to Learn: Interview with Dr. Peter Gray

Play

Dr. Peter Gray Ph.D is a research professor at Boston College, is author of the recently published book Free to Learn (Basic Books, 2013) and Psychology (Worth Publishers, a college textbook now in its 6th edition).  He has conducted and published research in comparative, evolutionary, developmental, and educational psychology.

Moreover, Dr. Gray is a friend of Unplugged Mom and an advocate for learning without school intervention.  I thoroughly enjoyed my second opportunity to interview Dr. Gray and I know that you will enjoy hearing his wise and experienced thoughts on childhood, education and school-less learning.

Prior to our interview, Dr. Gray offered me the opportunity to read his new book, Free to Learn.   I truly enjoyed reading this well written, well organized and beautifully stated piece of work.  Dr. Gray outlines the intentions of schooling and highlights the ways in which school is hazardous to our children’s health and well being, as well as their education.  He then lays out a wonderful explanation of what learning has been, should be and very well can be for natural human beings ready to embrace something better!  I emphatically recommend this book for any parent as well as any educator or anyone interested in improving education for our society.
